Sileni Seasonal Update Autumn 2009
Welcome to our Autumn news update.
As we move into Autumn we head straight into our 11th vintage. It is an exciting time of the year and a great time to visit if you want to get a true impression of what happens here over vintage. The Vineyard and Winery Teams are now working around the clock and we are pleased to welcome three French Cellar Hands to our 2009 Vintage Team.
This is not the only area that is busy at Sileni! Our domestic and export sales are thriving despite these tough economic times. We have recently released a new range of Single Vineyard and Benchmark Block wines and the Cellar Door and Restaurant Teams are busy with some exciting Autumnal promotions, including the release of the much awaited 2009 Culinary School Calendar.
SILENI VINTAGE UPDATE
After one of the best growing seasons on record we are now well into harvest. Dry and very warm conditions in Hawke's Bay from Christmas on allowed the grapes to develop without any disease pressure. The high temperatures pushed the chemical changes in the flavour precursors towards the ripe end of the spectrum.
By mid March we were half way through harvest – possibly the earliest we have ever been at this point. The Pinot Noir looks very good and the first of the Merlot is outstanding. Also some great hand picked Chardonnay for The Lodge, ripe and aromatic Pinot Gris, not to mention some pretty smart Sauvignon Blanc that will form the basis of our reserve Hawke's Bay Sauvignon Blanc, The Cape.
We have had a few rain events that serve to remind us that in primary production we are always at the mercy of the weather. And also that weather forecasting is a very inexact science. Which all goes to make life interesting.
Our vintage crew this year is proving to be very good. Three Frenchmen (well, two Frenchmen and one French woman actually) plus a couple of experienced Kiwis and one of our own vineyard guys are doing the hard yards under the watchful eyes of our two fantastic permanent cellar staff – Dan and Paul. These guys are the backbone of the winemaking side of the business.
Winemakers Rachel and Cairn continue to conjure up tank space seemingly from nowhere, although they do have the occasional difference of opinion on who had reserved which tank for the next intake. Their ability to see the vintage in 3D is a singular skill that enables everything to proceed with some semblance of order in the face of constantly changing tonnages and harvest dates. It would be very easy to end up with a scrambled brain, but they are both well organised and fairly laid back about the whole exercise. And Susan from the winery lab just keeps the numbers coming so we all know what we are dealing with.
On the whole, it’s looking to be a pretty good vintage, with some outstanding parcels of high quality fruit and generally very ripe flavours. Fingers crossed for decent weather for the second half!

SILENI EXPORT UPDATE
Sileni is now active in some 40 global markets, with newcomer Norway coming on board recently, along with prospective first orders from Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Croatia.
The global financial crisis has had a major impact in all countries and in all spheres of business and consumer goods. Wine however, is one of the more durable products in a recession. In all world markets, while the consumer is still buying wine, they are trading down in price significantly. This has been especially marked from October/November 2008 and will continue in the future.
Sileni has responded in a pro-active manner in all markets and is looking forward to continued volume growth in 2009, albeit at a lower level than in previous years.
Our Business Manager's are spending increasing amounts of time in all major markets to provide greater in-market support and to identify new business opportunities. China in particular is a market where the export potential for high quality New Zealand products, including wine, is huge. New Zealand's recently signed free trade agreement with China has resulted in many New Zealand companies, including Sileni, looking to China as an area of real growth potential.
On a recent visit to Beijing and Shanghai, Sileni's recently appointed Business Development Manager, Nigel Avery, and I caught up with TVNZ's Owen Polland to share our views on the potential of the Chinese wine market. Click here to see the TV One News feature.
Innovation of product will also be a major thrust for 2009 and beyond.
Even in a crisis there are new opportunities.....Sileni is identifying and responding to these aggressively - especially in export markets.

SILENI PEOPLE
International Cellar Hands on Deck for the 2009 Vintage
This year we are lucky enough to have three international vintage staff - all from France. Gilles De Conti from Bergerac, Pierre-Henri Etienne from Languedoc-Rousillon (Southern France) and Lauren Faupin from Burgundy are all here to help with the 2009 vintage.
Hiring international vintage staff is a great way to exchange information about winemaking. They will learn about the winemaking techniques that we employ at Sileni, and in turn, we learn about the methods of winemaking they have experienced in their home country and other countries they may have worked in. It is win win for us all and a great experience for these young and talented cellar hands.
Check out these photos of the team in the thick of the vintage action.
Over the last couple of years as our vineyards have begun to reach maturity we have started to produce small volumes of exceptional quality. These interesting parcels of wine reflect the particular flavours and styles that we can achieve from the best vineyard sites. For us it is all about producing unique wines with depth of flavour and fruit ripeness that become stand out or benchmark wines for New Zealand.
Some of the parcels are given single vineyards names that are appropriate for their vineyard or region of origin, but more often in the future we will be using the Benchmark Block primary title as part of a series from Sileni that is clearly recognisable to consumers. These wines may not be produced in every vintage and their style may not always be mainstream, but they will be consistently high quality and often a pointer to where we believe wine styles may evolve over time. They will always be food-friendly, with an emphasis on balance and sophistication.
The following wines are four of the best from Sileni's Single Vineyard and Benchmark Block range. Enjoy!
Grant Edmonds CHIEF WINEMAKER
The fruit was sourced from two north facing hills in the Omaka Valley. A ripe Marlborough style with subtle aromatics and rich flavours of stonefruit/passionfruit on the palate. It is ripe and full with excellent fruit concentration and a long, beautifully balanced finish. This wine has just won GOLD at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2009.
A very ripe Marlborough style, this wine has concentrated flavours of nectarine and tropical fruit. The palate is rich and mouth filling with good fruit concentration and a lingering finish. Bob Campbell has given this wine 4 STARS and says, "Attractive wine with delicately lifted aromatics and very good weight. The flavours are on the grassier side of the ripeness equation with a distinctly Sancerre-like character. A class act."
A classic warm region style, this wine has concentrated flavours of white peach, citrus and passionfruit. The palate is mouth filling and ripe with a long finish. Perfect served lightly chilled as an aperitif or to accompany white meats and seafood like oysters and crayfish.
Rich black plum and spice characters with soft, supple tannins, this single vineyard wine is from the Demak Brae block in the Triangle sub-region of Hawke's Bay. Soils are a thin layer of silt loam over "Redmetal" gravels - warm, free draining and excellent for red wine production. Enjoy up to eight years from vintage.

WINE FUNDRAISERS - SILENI ESTATES GIVES BACK
In recent years we have been increasingly approached to assist in many fundraising ventures for the local, and not so local, community. We are always keen to assist and in the tough economic times we have put our thinking caps on and come up with a solution to assist as many as possible.
Sileni Estates is now offering groups the opportunity to run wine fundraisers. Perfect for schools, sports teams and groups who need to raise funds for events, trips, new ventures or even just for everyday expenses. Sileni wine fundraisers are the perfect solution to an often daunting task. We offer a fantastic range of Sileni wines at very competitive prices for fundraising groups to sell to friends, family and the wider community. For every case of wine sold we guarantee a return of $40.00 (inc GST) to go towards the fundraising project.
We have had great success with offers to date, with a variety of groups running fundraisers, including High Schools (for language and sports trips), a Kindergarten (for general fundraising) and numerous sports teams (for travel costs to compete in overseas competitions). We have had fantastic feedback from these fundraising initiatives with the majority of groups raising in excess of $5,000! Here's what some of the groups have said and how much they raised:
"We are really pleased - this is a great fundraiser and we are extremely appreciative of the support from Sileni"
Onslow College Rowing Team - $5,746 raised
"Just wanted to say thank you again for the fantastic fundraising opportunity which Sileni have provided. Having to raise $5,000 per swimmer was a daunting task but the wine has covered a reasonable amount of the funds required."
Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Team, Wellington - $5,180 raised
"Our fundraiser has been a success and it has been a pleasure to deal with Sileni Estates. This is such a good deal. I hope you get a lot of support."
Northland Kindergarten - $2,124 raised
"We used the Sileni Fundraiser for our History and French study tour to Europe. It was a great success, with some students generating enough funds to pay for half their trip! The wine was also very well received by the wine-drinking fraternity in Wellington and was used by corporates and parents alike. We would definitely recommend it as a profitable and well managed exercise."
Wellington College - $33,086 raised
